Lovely Lissenung and Day Trips to Kavieng, New Ireland, PNG

4 – 24 June 2010

We totally adored our three weeks in Lissenung. We were so much at home it was LIKE being home. We could achieve so much portraying the many aspects of Kavieng’s village and marine life. First was an entire white board dedicated solely to us and our expedition’s objectives for New Ireland. When Ange and Dietmar Amon found out what it was we wanted, it became a serious business activity plan written down and checked every end of the day!

Quaint and charming, we could easily grow roots here and stay on and on and on

Our bungalow was literally a half minute walk away from Yogi’s favorite coral reef & island split level site. We didn’t need to walk far to watch the brilliant sunsets, the highly photogenic reefs and also for fishermen passing by with their canoes.

Finding Nemo is not so hard here. They are all over the shallow sandy bottom. Scientists and researchers are finding out that these true clownfish or Amphiprion percula like the taste of waters near tropical islands and not offshore reefs. They like their waters tea tasting with leaves coming from tropical island trees!

A none diving day trip brought us to a peculiar location in mainland Kavieng where massive wild river eels came out to get a feeding of canned tuna! At first glance I thought they were sharks!

Looking like from another planet, these massive eels, around 6 or so slithered around Yogi's legs and tried to bite his fingers performed to awestruck tourists

The Kavieng Market

Saturday morning is market day at the Kavieng harborside. Vegetables, mud crabs and much to our horror, cuscus are sold for food

Oh what a cute pet, we might all think. And probably this one is. But cuscus are generally sold in markets like this for food

The Lissenung staff went every early Saturday to the Kavieng market for all the ingredients of the food we were having.

Every morning, Nozaki prepared 2 eggs sunny side up for Yogi's breakfast. The eggs were special as they had new faces every morning. One day, another guest had the same eggs and Yogi's possessive reflex made him exclaim "Hey those are mine!"

Fresh seafood are delivered straight to the resort by fishermen from nearby Enuk Village. Fish, lobsters, mud crabs – we were in seafood heaven . . .

Seafood tapas of lobsters, squid, fish & chicken with beat, orange and walnut salad was final lunch in this wonderful resort
